I mean, I can’t blame it all on genetics. I drowned it in bleach and cut it to my shoulders alllll by myself when I went through that stupid rebellious teenage stage in year 9. Since then it’s been black, brown, ginger, blonde, brown again, pink, blue, singed, stripped, bleached, burnt, pulled, ripped – you name it.
It’s only now that I realise my mother was right. I should have never cut or died my hair. And it really pains me to say that. If you’re a girl who can stroll around carefree and extension-less, your hair blowing gracefully in the breeze, not a clip in sight then, I envy you.
If however, you’re in the same boat and want to undo years of neglect to get your hair on its merry way down your back, then you my friend have come to the right blog.
Okay so this is hardly Government protected information, you don’t have to sign anything don’t worry.
A lot of these however will probably blow your mind because they go against everything you ever were told or thought about hair … I know, I’ll give you a minute to take that in. First Santa, now this? I’m absolutely fed up of being lied to too.
But, these simple tips and tricks have completely transformed my hair. Plus, they are pretty unheard of guys, therefore you won’t have tried THEREFORE long, luscious locks are still within your grasp.

YOUR HAIR DOESN’T ACTUALLY STOP GROWING – IT’S A MYTH!
We’ve been lied to, fobbed off, told that if our hair doesn’t seem to be growing past a certain length that that’s it, we just have to accept it. No. Not true. It’s all v complicated but basically, your hair has three stages to it’s short or long life. Anagen (the growth stage), Catagen (the resting phase, where it stops growing & just chills) then Telogen (the shedding phase, where it starts to fall out). Genetics do have an impact on how long your hair stays in these phases but, it can be aided.
The Anagen phase can last anywhere from 2 to 6 years, so for longer hair, you need to keep your hair in this phase for as loooong as possible, by following these hair-care tips. Obviously, all of your hair strands aren’t in the same phase at the same time, otherwise, you’d go through bald stages, so that’s good. The tips below will help stimulate new hair strands and also, nourish your current ones to keep them in the Anagen phase as long as poss.
COCONUT OIL IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
I can’t stress how good this stuff is, I actually have my hair soaking in some right now as I’m writing this. Get yourself some extra virgin, unrefined, untouched, pure coconut oil. It’s so cheap and you can get it online or just at any supermarket/food store.
It’s full of fatty acids, meaning it penetrates faster and deeper than any other conditioner or treatment. I use it as a deep treatment and I genuinely think that this is what has dramatically changed my hair alone. I don’t get split ends anymore, and my hair looks thicker, shinier and longer.
Bearing in mind that at one point, a hairdresser told me my hair was in such poor condition she thought it might fall out. Now, people often comment on how well-conditioned my hair is.
TREATMENT: Before washing your hair, set a spare couple hours aside. Soak your hair in coconut oil, massaging it into the scalp and the ends especially. Leave for as long as you like, the longer the better. You could even sleep in it if you wanted. After that, wash and condition your hair as usual, then let air dry.
ACTUALLY, ANY NATURAL OIL IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
All these fancy adverts and products may look and sound amazing, but often hair products are just packed full of pointless or harsh chemicals that are going to do more harm than good. Ultimately drying your hair out and ruining it.
Save yourself some money. The only hair products you need should be things like Argon oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Avacado oil, Morrocan oil, Pomegranate oil, etc.
I feel a separate blog post coming on to go into detail about ways of oiling your hair, but many natural oils can be used to tame, smooth, nourish, add shine, reduce flakes and even fight off bacteria.
Either use as a deep treatment by heating a couple of tablespoons up and massaging into the scalp OR (with oils like Morrocan and Argon) using a tiny bit to sooth through the length and ends, little and often, for regular conditioning.
USE AN ALL NATURAL SHAMPOO!!!!!!
Fancy hair care products these days are usually full of toxic ingredients that kill your hair, not care for it. Don’t fall for their false claims.
Hold on, don’t panic. You won’t have to spend a fortune, or hours making your own natural products. All you have to do is have a quick look at the ingredients list.
If it contains any of the following
DO NOT USE. I repeat DO NOT USE!
- POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL
Not only are these stripping, clogging, damaging or poisoning your hair, but there is also evidence they can affect your overall health, and some have even been linked to cancer. AVOID!
DO AN APPLE CIDER VINAGER RINSE
Your shower will definitely smell like a salad, but you won’t mind once you see the results.
Apple Cider Vinegar boosts hair growth, has anti-bacterial properties so is great for things like Dandruff, dry scalp or itchiness and it gives your hair an incredible shine/reduces breakage. It also cleanses dirt build-up from sweat or other products plus helps balance the PH of your hair.
DIRECTIONS: Use one part apple cider vinegar, three parts water in a cup, and (optional) a few drops of lavender oil. Shampoo your hair, rinse and then pour the mix over your scalp, letting it run through your hair and allowing it sit for a few minutes. Rinse well, then condition as normal. Do this 1 – 2 times a week.
B B B B B B B B B
Listen, vitamins and supplements are confusing. No one really understands what they should be doing or taking and why, do they really? Today however, we’re only bothered about hair growth so, I can tell you that for that, IT’S B VITAMINS you need!!!!
Tablets that cost an arm and a leg, claiming to grow your hair 5″ in two weeks? Total and utter B/S. They’re literally just vitamins packed into the same place for easy consumption, most of them being ineffective and end up in your urine … That’s a very expensive wee.
All you really need is ONE B-complex vitamin tablet daily. That will contain a mix of all the B’s you need.
OR, you could take BIOTIN and vitamin B5/B12 separately.
Of course, getting your vits from food is always more beneficial, so load up on things like eggs, beef, chicken, avocado, nuts and potatoes. They’re happy-hair foods!
DON’T CUT IT BUT DO TRIM IT
Let’s settle this debate for once and for all. YES, it is true! You do need to cut your hair for it to grow. You don’t however, need to cut it every 6-12 weeks like what people all over the internet are telling you to do.
Think of it logically … what’s the point? You’re literally taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back; because hair doesn’t grow quick, usually only about 1″ every 8 weeks. If you then cut an inch off every 8 weeks too, you’re just cutting off the inch that you spent the last 8 weeks growing.
Instead, TRIM it only when it really needs a trim. Inspect your ends often, do they have split ends? or have they got that little white-ball at the end? Do they look a little un-loved/dry. If so, trim them off. Maybe, an 1″ or so, depending on the condition.
I cut my hair maybe once a year now. Because it honestly doesn’t need it, since following these tips the strength of my hair has improved that much.
I do, however, often look through my hair strands in detail and look for individual split ends. I then snip them off with PROPER HAIR CUTTING SCISSORS. Don’t use normal scissors because they aren’t small or sharp enough and will just cause more breakage.
DON’T OVERWASH IT
I have seriously oily hair. I can almost see you fellow oily-haired people reading this, thinking “hun, I’m not, not washing my hair” – I understand. My hair stays lush and bouncy for maybe one day, and then the next it’s pretty much greasy enough to mop a floor. Catch 22!
That’s the joys of dry shampoo though, isn’t it?
I try to make my hair stretch from to 2-4 days now, unless I literally can’t because I have work or I’m going out or something.
What’s better for your hair than it’s very own natural oils? … Nothing!
If I’m just sat around the house, I don’t care if my hairs a bit oily. In fact sometimes, I even pop a bit more oil on and embrace it. If you wash your hair often, you strip it of its essential natural oils. Plus, it’s a bit of a trauma for your hair anyways, what with all that scrubbing, and tugging, and combing and brushing and drying.
Dirty hair is obviously awful for growth too. So don’t be walking around with hair stuck to your head being like “Ema told me to”, but when you do wash it, use a chemical free shampoo infused with hair lengthening ingredients like KERATIN or CAFFEINE, then massage your scalp in circles when washing to improve circulation and stimulate hair growth.
CHANGE UP THE POSITION OF YOUR PONY TAIL
If you always tie your ponytail in the same place, you’re straining those certain hair strands meaning they can and will break.
Simply just change the position of the ponytail on your head every now and then. Or, plait it instead.
PLAITING/BRAIDING YOUR HAIR IS PROBABLY THE HEALTHIEST STYLE YOU COULD DO.
LESS OR NO HEAT!
Kind of obvious, but yeah … heat is bad. Very bad.
I’m not gunna lie, if I’m off out or want a super slick style, I’ll defo be whacking the straighteners and tongs out; but that probably happens about once a month (if that) because my hair is super straight anyways and I just really can never be bothered to curl it. #EFFORT.
If you do use heat though, even if it’s just drying it then pleassseeeee USE A GOOD HEAT PROTECTING SPRAY!!
BRUSH YOUR HAIR LIKE ITS SPUN FROM GOLD
Another no-brainer but constantly brushing your hair basically wrecks it. Especially the way I’ve witnessed girls rag a brush through their strands as if they’re attacking them.
GENTLY get tangles out by starting from the bottom of your hair with a wide-toothed comb WHEN IT’S WET and has conditioner on it (despite controversy). Detangling when dry will literally just rip your hair, and starting from the scalp will only pull tangles down into a big knot.
Also, research what type of brush is good for your hair type.
I use a boar bristle brush because it’s good at distributing natural oils throughout your hair. I also use a wooden/bamboo brush.
DO A COLD WATER RINSE AT THE END OF EACH WASH
Think of this like a toner but for hair. It closes the hair follicle.
Warm water opens the hair up, letting all the goodness from your shampoo and conditioner do their job. Cold then closes it, sealing in moisture. It also helps prevent heat damage and breakage.
Ultimately this will make your hair look shinier, healthier, less frizzy and will help it grow! It’s a tiny step that makes a big difference.
IT ALL STARTS FROM WITHIN
Nothing grows without water.
Your body is what, something stupid like 60% water? And as you can imagine, other places in your body need it a lot more than your hair. Our hair is last on the feeding-chain.
Help your body out by drinking a ton and it will obviously thank you in a lot more ways than just making your hair grow!
Nourish your body with good foods. Leafy vegetables, beans, seeds, lean meats.
Your hair is made up of mostly protein, so drinking protein shakes or eating a lot of good meat will make your hair shine from within.
Exercise will do your hair the world of good too.
A healthy you = healthy hair. Crops don’t grow in bad soil!
THE INVERSION METHOD
I’ve saved the best till last!
If you research this a bit more on the internet, you’ll find mad claims that it makes your hair grow like, 5″ in a week. Sorry to disappoint you but that’s just a blatant lie.
It does work though. So, is worth giving a go.
I’ve tried this twice now, and my hair grew at least half an inch in a week both times … so, a couple of cm. Which is impressive, because that’s how much it would usually grow in a month!
I’ll give you the low-down but feel free to take your research into this elsewhere for more detail.
HOW TO DO IT:
- Massage an oil of your choice into your scalp i.e. coconut oil.
- Invert yourself for 4 minutes. So you could, sit on a bed/chair and hang your head between your knees as if you were painting your toe nails, lay backwards off a bed, stand up and hang your head low, etc …
- Continue to massage oil in to hair as you’re inverted.
- Repeat this every day for 7 days!
- DO NOT repeat this process for another 3 weeks … So basically, only do this once every month! Otherwise your body will get used to excess blood flow and it won’t work.
The idea behind this is that massaging and inverting your scalp (head below your heart) increases circulation which stimulates hair growth by allowing more blood flow to the hair follicles!
Long post, but we made it in the end.
I’ve been doing these tips religiously now for at least a year and honestly, my hair looks like a different persons head of hair. Actually, this post was a requested post by several friends, because they can’t believe my hair transformation and wanted in.
So, I hope you’ve found this useful and that these tips will do the trick for you too!
